Cultural exchange through food

This was our second time that we went out together on weekend. On this occasion, Indonesian participants invited other MSP participants to the Indonesia-Japan Friendship Festival 2015 at Yoyogi Park near our residence.

This is an annual event promoting friendship between Indonesian and Japanese through food and cultural activities. As we see at other festivals, there were market and food areas serving popular Indonesian dishes. On the main stage there were also traditional as well as contemporary music and dances.

Entering the festival, the first thing that hit us was the delicious smell coming from the food stands. Indonesian restaurants in Tokyo were serving the best they've got, from nasi-goreng (stir-fried rice) to sate (skewered and grilled meat). Coconut, mango and rich complex spices were everywhere. They showed little chili pepper illustrations on menus to show which dishes were hot.

We invited MSP participants to attend the festival in order to get to know each other by exchanging culture through food and cultural activities. We enjoyed eating spicy dishes, such as nasi-goreng, mie-goreng (stir-fried noodle), sate and soto (chicken soup), while also enjoying Bali dance performances. When our stomach was full, we left the festival bringing with us a pleasant experience and some kerupuk (shrimp cracker). We are looking forward to the next cultural exchange of others countries of the participants.(Ahmad Fathoni)
